OpenAI has introduced an upgraded version of Codex, featuring cloud-powered AI agents capable of handling multiple programming tasks concurrently without local resource strain. The system operates semi-autonomously, offering capabilities ranging from bug detection to complex code refactoring—positioning it as a potential disruptor for traditional dev teams.
The release follows last month’s launch of Codex CLI, a free open-source tool. Unlike conventional AI coding assistants that require iterative prompting, these agents execute tasks independently with dedicated compute resources. "Software engineering is changing fundamentally," noted OpenAI’s president, suggesting industry-wide transformation by 2025.
